KeymasterHi Hannah,
You push down to 15 beans (squeezing into the bone) and then release to 14 beans (the point where you can just feel the qi barely emerging). At 14 beans, you ask your question “In what position/s to I feel something going on?” Then return to 15 beans and ask yourself did what you felt disappear or remain evident? D for divergent (it disappeared). E for Eight Extra (it’s still evident).
Happy pulse taking!
(I will talk about remote pulse taking around the end of May.)Ann Cecil-Sterman

KeymasterLiz,
Andrew and I just read your message. Thank you so much for a heart-felt letter. We couldn’t agree with you more.
And it was great to have you in the class. I hope your children are doing well in the lockdown. Teenage years are challenging enough!
Very warmly,
Ann (and Andrew)Ann Cecil-Sterman

KeymasterElizabeth, thank you for sharing this case with the community. I agree with both Cody and Lois. Remember, the feeling of it not being genuine maybe her feeling. I think that’s part of what Lois is suggesting. The important thing is that if that is what you’re picking up, and that itself is distracting to you, you might consider Yang Wei Mai to break that cycle and help her move onward. The Eight Extras don’t have to be treated over three months. That is the protocol because it takes Jing 90 days according to the classics. But we are in a quickening. Things that took a long time do shift in the clinic years ago are now moving at such a rapid rate. One treatment can resonate deeply enough to create deep and permanent change. I think you might cut yourself some slack about treatment planning, Elizabeth. I don’t think we can ever have a plan because the changes that occur in each treatment can be so surprising. Things can crop up that were not expected (healing crises) and they must be deal with as we go. But coming back to your own triggers and being unable to find them points to your feeling the patient’s own feelings as your own. It’s a blessing in the clinic have that level of connection, but make sure you keep that feeling over there in her body and experience it there while you stay in your seat. I think it you practice that, you’ll find that your empathic abilities will carry you a long way in the clinic. Ann

KeymasterElizabeth, I’m so glad that’s piqued your interest in those pulses. They are amazing.
Hannah, If there were Dai Mai involvement you’d feel the rocking lateral, not distal-proximal, OR, you’d feel a bulge between positions. You’re thinking too hard!!! (Hug.)Ann Cecil-Sterman
KeymasterHi Lois,
Ted Kaptchuk, The Web that has no Weaver, and also between Heaven and Earth are probably the closest to what you’re looking for.
(I am writing one at the moment but am stalled with it because there’s a growing number of lay people subscribing to the blog for exactly the reason you describe and I’m focussed there now for that exact reason, rather than that book.) But the best teaching comes from the practitioner in the clinic. Words are so limiting and with your presence you can convey the truth of it all.
Thanks for writing, Lois.

KeymasterHello Elizabeth,
Yes, that’s a trap, you’re quite right… we can’t know what healing means for anyone. for her, healing could mean getting up and walking, but it could mean acceptance. If we create ideas about what should be for an individual, those ideas could be anywhere from limiting, to being wide of the mark. Then we get disappointed, the patient senses the disappointment and feels that they and the practitioner have failed and we are worse off than before the treatment. So I agree, better to just let the treatments take their course, confident that the invitation they present is taken up to the maximum degree they can be by that patient at that time, and that all is well and good. This is not meant to come across as negative or hopeless, but as honoring of the patient. AAnn Cecil-Sterman
KeymasterThat’s important but not sufficient. You might consider a separate page in which you say you advised them to seek medical advice and they refused and get them to sign and date it. You would say that it’s a requirement of your insurance company which of course it is. As the laws change we must always be functioning within the law. We must keep our licenses and keep the profession in tact and take care of the patient all at the same time. A

KeymasterElizabeth,
On intake forms in the USA there should be a line that requires initialing that says that the patient has been advised to seek the advice of a medical doctor. Also, when patients have urgent complaints, we are required by law to refer them. If they decide not to go, that must be noted in the chart. These laws have nothing to do with your being able to conduct an effective treatment for that same complaint. Nearly always, the patient make decisions in alignment with their seeking alternatives to that approach in the first place.Ann Cecil-Sterman
KeymasterHi Hannah,
This is a form of Wei Mai pulse. The Yang Wei Mai can rock proximally-distally about the cun position and the Yin Wei Mai pulse can rock proximally-distally about the chi position.
It’s inviting you to consider 8X channel pulses. Press down to 15 beans and see what you find.
